The town Nové Hrady

Novohradská radniceThe oldest preserved written reference about the castle in Nové Hrady is dated 21 of May 1279. In the beginning of the 14th century Nové Hrady, which have be already given the title town, has belonged to the Lords from Landštejn. Those then sold it on 18 of August 1359 to the brothers Peter, Jošt, Oldřich and John from Rožmberk. In the second half of the 14th century the town has been fortified and local townsfolk have been awarded the same rights and privileges as belonged to the citizens of the towns that belonged to the king.

After the death of the last Rožmberk Petr Vok in the year 1611 Nové Hrady has moved, with other properties of the Rožmberk family, to Jan Jiří from Švamberk. However this blood line has hold this domain only to the year 1620, when Petr from Švamberk has joined the side of the rebelling guilds and after their defeat his property has been confiscated. A very important chapter in the history of the town and the whole area of Novohradsko has begun on the 6th of February 1620, then the emperor Ferdinand II. has awarded the domain as a payment of debt to Karl Bonaventura Buquoy. The blood line of Buquoy’s has than hold the earldom 325 year until the year 1945 and has left here many important edificial, artistic and natural monuments. The whole area has been given a strong impulse to develop thanks to the establishment of the glass works, which on the turn of 18. and 19. century have reached the world  name , mainly thanks to the manufacturing of hyalite – black and red glass, lightproof, whose discovery is accredited to Jiří Buquoy.

Nové Hrady of today is a developing town, especially in the field of tourism, wellness, spas, science and research. The visitors of the town are drawn by the now accessible historical objects, pristine nature in the surroundings of the city and conditions that are convenient for bicycling and of course the Wellness Hotel Rezidence.
